Folklore
Candleberry ( bayberry ) received its name from the folks around the 18th century. Used for candle and soap making, it was a much more pleasant wax to work with than tallow. Traditional bayberry candles were made by collecting berries in the fall from the Myrica pensylvanica bush; five pounds of berries could yield about one pound of wax. Because of this small, unpredictable yield, the candles were burned only on special occasions or given as a gifts.
The poem traditionally given with candles:
This Bayberry candle is a gift from a friend, On Yuletide Eve burn it down to the end. A Bayberry candle burned down to the socket, Brings luck to the home and wealth to the pocket!
The Hexagon – Geometry of the Soul
The six-sided hexagon shape is symbolic of universal and divine harmony. Its shape provides an ancient link between the duality of life and the afterlife. It is a concrete representation of the holographic universe suggested by the hermetic quote, ‘As above, so below”.
Forever associated with the honeybee and the hive, the hexagon is a timeless symbol heralding access to the mysteries of transcendence and to the underworld. Gods and goddesses Aphrodite, Vishnu, Pan and the sun-god Ra, were said to be as honey, an ambrosial sweetness, who, when they touched the earth, were all depicted as honeybees on a flower.
Honeybees hibernate for three months, and emerge as if born again. The priestesses of the ancient mystery schools, who were guides through ceremony beyond the veil were nicknamed “Bees”. Sacred temples of the early Christians featured the hexagon as sacred geometry in their architecture, believing it to bring humans closer to their divine nature.
Equilateral triangles also represent male, female, and the earthly elements of fire, water, air and earth. Linked together they form the seal of Solomon and the Star of David. The hexagon is the six-sided shape at the core of these inter-locking triangles, representing the union and genesis of creation.

Properly maintained beeswax will not smoke or create soot, but always keep out of drafts, properly distinguish to prevent potential wax splatter and use protective vessels. Trim wick before each use. For any pillar candle, such as the hexagon, you must always be committed to burn for 2-3 hours at a time to ensure the wax pool reaches within ½ inch of edge, when you distinguish the flame, wait about 5 min and then gently fold in the walls of the soft wax without drowning the wick.
